Brestovac Tuberculosis Sanatorium

Brestovac is an abandoned tuberculosis sanatorium located on the hills outside of Zagreb in Croatia. It was built in 1909 and saw service as a military hospital in both world wars, but it was abandoned in the late 1960s and now lies in ruins.

Well, I say abandoned… that's not entirely true as Brestovac is now used as a venue for paintball battles. This is a bit of a shame as the place is now covered in the fluorescent splats of spent paintballs. But when I visited the place was shrouded in veils of mist which gave it back some of the haunting splendour is must have had in the 1980s and 90s before the paintballers took over.

This was one of those occasions when conversions to black and white had the additional benefit of disguising the paintball splats!
