Statues

I've always loved taking photographs of statues for a number of reasons. To begin with they're objects of beauty and as such well worth recording. Secondly they provide an opportunity to do something akin to portrait photography, except that your subject never tires or blinks at the wrong moment! Some people disapprove of taking photographs of statues, arguing that in doing so you are just exploiting the sculptor's skill and creativity. But I would argue that as photographers, pretty much everything we photograph has been created by someone or something else, even if that "something else" is God, mother nature, or evolution (just pick the one that best suits your own personal world view!).

I am lucky enough to live in a country (Scotland) with no shortage of beautiful statuary at which to point my camera, and I've also travelled to a few more, with the result that there are nearly 400 images in this gallery in total (I have divided the gallery into regions and countries/cities so you don't have to face all 400 images at once!). Some of these photographs date back almost 30 years, while other are much more recent. My photography cataloguing habits have varied considerably over the decades, so some of these images have more keywords than others, but I've never-the-less included all the keywords I have to give you the best chance of knowing where each statues is located.
